说实话，读这本书，没有与之产生共鸣。原因可能是自己没文化，不了解故事的历史背景。另外这个故事的荒诞仿佛现在又在中国发生着，好像又很熟悉，因此没感觉惊讶。天天发生的事，有什么大惊小怪的。
如果把它当作一本爱情小说看，男女主人公的爱情故事又不是那么罗蔓蒂克。如果把它当作一本社会小说看，批判社会的精神又不是那么犀利。它也不是一本自传体小说，虽然故事由第一人称叙述，但却讲着别人的故事。
故事发生在1920年的纽约，在當時，經濟飛速發展，流行爵士樂、輕佻文化、販賣私酒、犯罪率高，都在小說中刻畫出來。看看，这不就是当下的中国。
男主人公盖茨比在纽约长岛有一处超级大的的庄园，每天灯红酒绿地举办着各种宴会聚会，客人来自全纽约，很多人根本不认识盖茨比，或者从没见过盖茨比，因为盖茨比很少公开与大家见面，很多人就像故事的叙述人尼克一样，不知道盖茨比长什么样。但是他们仍然乐此不疲地到这里来享乐。盖茨比这么有钱，他就这样奢侈无度地浪费着，他为了什么呢？
原来他是为了追求真爱。他去当兵前认识了故事的女主人公黛西，两人相爱，但因为要去当兵而被迫分开。盖茨比去当兵了，而黛西把自己嫁出去了，嫁给了一个她不爱的人。黛西现在就住在盖茨比的庄园对面，隔海相望。盖茨比希望与黛西再续前缘。他希望通过自己奢迷的放荡的狂欢聚会吸引黛西的注意，让她回心转意。
黛西的生活其实并不幸福。她不爱自己的'丈夫，而他也有自己的新欢，并频繁与自己的情人约会。
黛西终于通过故事的叙述人，也是她的表弟再次见到了盖茨比，两人重归于好。这件事情被黛西的丈夫汤姆发现了。雖然湯姆自己也有情婦，但他還是對妻子的出軌倍感憤怒。湯姆逼迫大家前往紐約市，在廣場酒店的套房裏與蓋茨比對峙，告訴他二人间的故事是蓋茨比所不能領悟的。不僅如此，他揭露蓋茨比販賣私酒，從事其它見不得人的勾當，才得到了今日的财富。黛西感觉自己无法承受，只想离开，湯姆叫蓋茨比驱车送她回家。
尼克、湯姆驅車回家时經過“灰燼谷”，發現湯姆的情婦默特爾被盖茨比的车了。事後，尼克從蓋茨比那裏得知是黛西在开车，但蓋茨比不愿揭发自己的爱人。默特爾的丈夫喬治誤以爲車主就是自己妻子的情人，對此展開搜索。湯姆誤導喬治，後者發現車主是蓋茨比後，來到豪宅，開槍行凶，隨後自盡。尼克爲蓋茨比舉辦葬禮，看破了東部的生活方式，回到了中西部的老家。
故事有些荒诞，但是又好像在现实生活中上演。这个故事在1920年的美国曾经上演过，如今又在中国的土地上上演着。多少富豪每天花天酒地，家里有个看家却不爱的老婆，自己还在外面招惹情妇，又容不得自己的老婆移情别恋。多少人崇拜金钱，不择手段的挣钱，而没有了生活，并丧失了人生的目标。在爱情，家庭，金钱面前，人们变得面目狰狞。
本书的电影拍的好像还不错，找机会一定看一看，说不定比小说好看。
