On summer vacation of this year, I studied in novel _ old man and sea _ of Hemingway , famous writer of . ,. I admire the old fisherman's will in the novel very much, he lets me understand that a person must have unremitting spirit, could succeed .
What the novel is described is an old fisherman almost the sixty years old, when go to sea and fish alone once, have angled to a big fish, but can not draw. After tough fisherman and fish have socialized for a few days, just find this is a big Malin's fish which exceeds several times of one's own fishing boat, though know perfectly well that it is very difficult to win , does not give up yet. Because big Malin fish fishlike smell of wound attract odd herds of shark vie for the food again later, but the old man is still unwilling to give up like this, stress the tight encirclement finally , take the large fish back to fishing port , let other fishmen admire it endlessly. The old fisherman thinks that as I read _: It is really too close from here to coast, perhaps there are bigger fish in the farther place ……_ When,admire very much because this old fisherman in the persons, because play not for some fishing he already at this moment I, but he is not satisfied with the existing state of affairs , but advance towards greater goal.
Seeing us again, meet some little difficulties at ordinary times , all of us complain bitterly. Old fisherman's spirit that makes great efforts to struggle fearless of danger and difficulty that the novel has been extolled, we should be like him too, can' t be satisfied with the current situation , should be positive upwards, it should be unremitting to do anything, it must not give up halfway to meeting difficulty should meet the difficulty. Only in this way, we could obtain greater success and victory .
the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.
I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.
Pride and Prejudice is a chefdoeuvre.
My first impression of this story was from screen.
It's long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I don't remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It's pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine,though I didn't think she's beautiful. But she's smart. However, I didn't pay much attention to the plot. I thought it's so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I haven't read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice.
In fact, I didn't understand the story at that time. I didn't know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didn't find where' s the prejudice. I thought it's normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I'm a prejudiced person so I can't find where's wrong. I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.
The the old man and the seais a brief but meaningful story. After fishing nothing during the past 84 days, the old fisherman San Diego finally captured a salmon, which weight is over 1500 pounds. After a tough struggle, exactly, three days’ standoff, the old man eventually killed the big fish that came to surface because of being exhausted. However, on the way to harbor, the old man was attacked by many sharks who tracked after the smell of the dead salmon, what he still hold was only the bone of the big fish when he arrived at port.
It is said that the author, Ernest Hemingway who is a great American writer wrote the novel in only eight weeks, basing on one of his friend’s true experience. He created the figure of the old man which was later called by people “tough man” and showed his life attitude and spiritual world. The most well-known sentence of this novel and also the topic of it is that: “man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” These words become belief of many readers.
In my opinion, the whole story is about a battle between an old man and the sea, both of which are considered to ha一ve symbolic meanings according to critics. The old man once was so energetic and strong but couldn’t get harvest from the sea. He used his old body and strong mind to fight against nature and challenge his fate. He did win a bit—he got the large fish, but he lost totally because he carried back only the skeleton of the fish with his hands bleeding. On the other hand, he had done all he could to fight against all unlucky things and didn’t lose his face. He beha一ved like a real man, a tough man.
It’s a tragic novel, but it’s also a heroic symphony. The poor old fisherman was regarded as a failure by other fishers as he had captured nothing during the past 84 days. When he fished that 1500-pound salmon, he determined to fight to death even though he knew clearly that the big fish was much stronger than him, and finally, he succeeded. But the ordeal was not to the end even he had succeeded in capturing the big fish. The salmon was bigger than his fishing-boat, he dad no choices but binding the fish to one side of his boat. During his way home, the dead salmon was attacked again and again by shakes followed after the smell of blood. He had to do everything he could do to protect his victory. Harpoon was taken away by a shark, he tied the knife on the oar to stick the shake; the knife was broken, he used short stick to fight against the shark; the short stick was lost, he fought with rudder···Nothing could destroy his volition though the fish was eaten by sharks. God seems to ha一ve no pity toward such a great old man; he dropped misfortunes on this poor old man time and time again. But the old San Diego never ga一ve in.
The old man’s story is not only a symbol of the relationship between human and nature, but also a symbol of the indestructible spirit of human. In reality, the old man was defeated, but in spirit, he was a winner. The spirit of tenacious fight of him suggested the dignity and perseverance of human people. Even a great successful person has some experience of frustration. There are various reasons of being failed, but even an insignificant failure is an unbearable strike. Going to sea, he would gain another hope of being successful. Maybe, the sinister life environment and the tenacity of life attitude is the reason that this composition is more and more attractive. Life itself is a kind of endless pursuit, just like the old man’s saying“human is not born to be failure, one could be ruined, but he could not be defeated.” These words remind me of the “Destiny symphony_, in which Beethoven says that “I could be destroyed, but I couldn’t be conquered”。 They indicate the meaning of a hero, the meaning of life. Also, it’s what this story wants to tell people: human should face the failure bra一vely. From this respect, this book is not an allegory or a fairy tale, but a realistic works. What’s important in this story is not win but the value of a life. The old man dares to challenge the extremity and over the limit time and time again. What he brought to human is not only an attitude of confidence, but also a powerful strength of spirit.
The gives me a lot of revelation. What is failure? Failure is the bra一very to get up the courage to climb up when you fell down and to get the courage to climb up again when you fell again and never lose the hope of life and the dream of life. What is hero? Hero is the people who dare to face the frustration, dare to challenge the frustration and defeat the frustration and overcome oneself, they ha一ve the courage to achieve their dream, even they ha一ve failed many times.
What scary us is not the failure, but the weakness and giving in to the failure. Once you ha一ve surrendered, all your dreams will never come true. This thought also has a significant meaning to our realistic life. Life is like the old man’s fishing, even you are failed, but you will not lea一ve regret for life, because you ha一ve struggled and faced to the challenges bra一vely. We’ll be the winner of our life, and our life will be splendid because we ha一ve struggled with our dreams.
In the past a few days, we learned something about a novel called the old man and the sea, after learning it, I have some thoughts about it.
The story introduced an old experienced fisherman to us. His name is Santiago. He has not caught any fish for 84 days, so the 85th day, he went to the deep sea, trying to get some fish. It was a hard time when Santiago floated on the sea for almost 3 days in order to catch a big fish called marlin. Finally, he made it. But unfortunately, the smell of blood attracted a lot of sharks. At last, all his effort to drive away the sharks was in vain. His marlin was eaten up, and he still got nothing.
Although the consequence was not so good, I still believe that Santiago is a real hero. A hero, not means that he is never afraid of anything, but means that he is really afraid, but he never gives up. This is hero. In addition, his words in this story also impressed me a lot. He sai
d,“man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed, but not defeatded.’’ Perhaps we wish that everything can go well in our daily lives, but as we know, it is only a wish. We are sure to meet some trouble in our whole lives, so we must be brave. We can never give up. No matter how old we are, no matter how unlucky we are,
no matter how hard the problems are, we are expected to solve those problems bravely, and never say:“no”.
Of course, now we are college students, we may have not met any problems that were really difficult to solve. But if we enter the society after a few years, we have to face some trouble which will make you lose your head. Then will you give upSantiago taught us never give up, man is not made for defeat. Be steel in your future lives, and I really hope that we can lead happy lives in the future.
The novel told a story about how the old fisherman Santiago struggled with the sea. Santiago gained a huge fish called Marlin after having drifted in the sea for 84 days. It was a fish that is 2 feet longer than the boat and that had dragged his boat for two days before being stabbed to death. It seemed that the old man wasn’t so successful, because he encountered a shark, struggled with the serious environments, even the only spoil——Marlin just left a skeleton. However, the most important thing is that Santiago had never given up for a moment.
In this novel, I am deeply impressed by his persevering. I admire the old fisherman for his steel-like mind and persistence. I think there’s a real young man inside him, although he is at an old age and no longer goes back to his youth. From the strong comparison between the old look and the young heart, we can easily find that it is the positive firm spirits that make us hold our hopes and keep trying all the time and finally guide the roads towards success.
Through the vivid description about the struggle between human and nature, Hemingway expresses his opinion that the courage inside human beings can help us face any failure and overcome any difficulty. In the book, the hero Santiago was beat by the shark, which we regard as a symbol of doom, but he chose to struggle with the fortune instead of losing faith in his life. Just the same as the hero Santiago, all of us will meet with various kinds of difficulties in our daily life, which is a rule of human’s fate. So how can we adjust our attitudes toward these and what should we do with so many problems? The old fisherman tell us the truth——“Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not be defeated”.
When I read _ the senior fisherman think: Here to the seacoast really was too near, perhaps could have a bigger fish in a farther place..._ When, I extremely admire this senior fisherman, because he by now already projected on some fish, but he had not settled to the present situation, but was approaches the bigger goal has a look us, usually meets one slightly is difficult, we all complain will be the motherland future, will be supposed to like this old person same mind lofty aspiration, will even better pursue even better, the bigger goal.
When I read _ the big marlin start fast to gather round the young fishing boat hover, twined the cable on the mast, the old person right hand lifted up high the steel fork, leapt the water surface in it the flash, did utmost throws to its heart, one wail ended the big fish’s life, it was static static floats on the water surface..._ When, my heart also liked together the big stone extremely admire old person that kind do not dread, the relentless spirit, although knows the match strength is very strong, but he not slightly flinches, but is welcomes difficultly because had this kind of spirit, the senior fisherman only then achieved this life and death contest also must study senior fisherman’s spirit in life, handles the matter does not fear the difficulty, only then can obtain successfully.
